A brief history of Louisville CO:
Louisville was unlike typical coal camps of that era as the miners lived right in the town where they worked. They could literally walk to work. They were tough and extremely resourceful men and women who relied on each other to survive.
In August 1877 the first coal mine, the Welch Mine, was opened, Louis Nawatny, a landowner in the area, named the city after himself. Over time 30 coal mines opened in and around Louisville.
Currently, Louisville is home to manufacturing plants that provide employment opportunities and attract new residents and offers those residents a chance for an active lifestyle.
Louisville has over 32 miles of trails, with some hugely popular ones such as the Leon A.Wurl Wildlife Sanctuary, Davidson Mesa Open Space, Warembourg Open Space, and the Daughenbaugh Open Space. The Old Town area hosts outdoor concerts and farmers’ market during the summer.
