A brief look at Longmont’s Industrial History:

  • In 1887 the J.H. Empson Cannery opens. Canning peas and other vegetables. The Kuner-Empson factory remained operational until 1970.
  • 1903 the Longmont Sugar Factory is built. Soon renamed the Great Western Sugar Factory. This factory closed in 1977.
  • 1911 The city builds a hydropower plant on the North St. Vrain river which provides electric power to the city residents.
  • 1950 Longmont Foods opens. Later to be renamed as the Butterball turkey processing plant. This plant closes in 2011.
  • 1965 IBM begins construction of a large technology plant between Boulder and Longmont. This begins the shift from agriculture to technology.
